Lesson1- So What is this Podcast?

Before embarking upon how to start a podcast, one thing must be understood quite clearly. Podcasting is a very hard job and can leave you completely confused. However, that does not mean that it is an impossible task. So first things first, you need to ask yourself a question: Why is it that you want to start a podcast?

It may seem like a very simple question or a very difficult one. Irrespective of such concerns, there may be several responses in your head. However, if your response is because everybody else is doing it, then it is not a good enough response. You need a much better reason to start a podcast than simply doing it because others are doing it. Remember when our parents used to reprimand us and say that if everybody jumps off the bridge, will we do the same? The same logic applies here, and more if not less.

Here are a few data retrieved from the Edison Research Podcast Consumer study, 2018 that you must keep in mind while deciding your audience.

  • Nearly 70 percent of podcast listeners are aged between 18 and 54.
  • The ratio between males and females is almost equal.
  • Podcast listeners tend to have a higher level of educational attainment.
  • 51 percent of podcast listeners earn between $75,000 and $150,000 per year.

Next, you need to decide what will be the content of your podcast. The content will have to be in line with a theme. You need to understand that it is a crucial element of your podcast creation. Therefore, you must give the subject matter a proper structure. Be sure that your theme is not a vague one but specifically points out what the podcast will be about.

One task for you is to find inspiration in the right places. Inspiration can come from any
