What’s inside

The natural response of human beings is to ensure comfort and cling to it. Indeed, even as that comfort begins to disappear, we are inclined to overlook the changes and stick to what we know. Spencer Johnson in this short book investigates how and why we should address change in our lives. Cheese is a metaphor for the essential things we need in our everyday life, whether in a personal or professional environment.

Lesson 1. Introduction.

Who Moved My Cheese? An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and Your Life, published in 1998, is a motivational business fable by Spencer Johnson. In this book, Spencer introduces fables on how to actively respond to change. Overcoming a fear, handling major life changes, and finding a way to realize dreams are some issues that each one of us is struggling with in life. Spencer deals with these problems in his book.

He conveys his message through a simple story of 4 characters, who live in a maze. Among them are two mice, named Sniff and Scurry, and two little people, named Hem and Haw. When the cheese disappears, they set out on a journey through the maze in search of new cheese.

Through the journey of these 4 characters, the author aims to achieve a better understanding of human nature. The story narrates how each of these characters deals with this new change.

The book teaches you how to be better prepared for major life changes. It tells you to pay attention to such changes and adapt quickly to them. According to the author, thinking like a mouse may help you to do this and reach your goals. One needs to visualize the goals to increase their chances of attaining them.

In these lessons you will learn about:

  1. The methods and ways through which you can achieve your goal.
  2. Why change is necessary.
  3. How to get out of your comfort zone.
  4. A new direction will help get things better.
  5. How to seek new opportunities.

Lesson 2. Find your cheese, but in an effective way.

The two mice, Sniff and Scurry, have only one aim: find the damn cheese! They don’t think too much, and spend most of their time running up and down the corridors of the maze in search of the cheese. This method of acting without thinking too much, is considered to be the most effective method in fulfilling your goals.

It is instructive, and saves much time and energy. They do not waste their time being angry and annoyed. For example, if there is no cheese at the end of the trail, Sniff and Scurry would simply turn around and crawl along the other trail.

Another pair, Hem and Haw, is also looking for cheese in the maze. Finding the cheese would make them feel happy and successful. They were hungry
