Lesson 1. The Four Yogas.
The book begins by explaining what yoga is. The union of mind, body and spirit is known as yoga. The union of your individuality with the divineness of nature is what assembles the universe. Yoga connects your soul, your whole physical existence with the inner cosmos. Enhanced emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being can be experienced, once you establish yourself in this state. Your desires and Nature's desires become one when the union with the spirit takes place. A sense of lightheartedness, a sense of yourself, and a sense of relief can be felt once you can establish this connection of delight. There, you can find a spontaneous blossoming of intuition, creativity, insight, imagination, purpose and meaning. You will find yourself in between good decisions, the decisions that are going to benefit not only you but others surrounding you as well.
Traditionally, there are four forms of yoga: Gyan, Bhakti, Karma and Raja.
Gyan yoga is the yoga of understanding and as well as the yoga of science. Science should not be seen as an enemy of spiritual awakening. Instead, science should be considered as a potentially helpful friend. The yoga of knowledge can be very effective if we are mature enough to transcend beyond the temporary seduction of the diversion of intellect.
The second yoga is Bhakti. This is the yoga of decision. Bhakti means the love of God. The divine light of God exists in every living being on the face of this planet. We can discover our higher selves through our relationships with others. On this journey, we might run through phases of attraction, infatuation and intimacy until finally we once again reach our destination. We must not confuse the yoga of love with self-absorption or self-pity. If you are compassionate to everyone and choose love in every aspect of your life you are practising the yoga of love, the Bhakti yoga.
The third yoga is Karma yoga. Through this, you believe that all your actions belong to one Supreme Being. When you practice karma yoga in its truest form, you will become detached from the outcomes.
The fourth yoga is called Raja yoga. We will explore the subject of Raja yoga in this book. It is referred to as the Raja yoga as it is considered as the royal way to yoga. This yoga is evaluated as rich and abundant in knowledge and experience. Anyone with a little bit of training can practice Raja yoga. This yoga helps one practice the other yogas with effortlessness.
